The History Of Brackenfell Cricket Club

Brackenfell Cricket Club was founded in 1974 by cricket lover Vernon Bassett. We obtained special permission from the Western Province Cricket Association to play in the Boland League, despite falling within the Western Province geographical boundaries.

In the late 1970's Brackenfell Cricket Club applied to the Western Province Cricket Union for permission to become a fully-fledged member of the Boland Union. This was granted without any objection. Brackenfell immediately made its mark in Boland, with Vernon Bassett the captain of a team which at one stage included six Bassett brothers.

More Than Just Cricket !!

The club gained first league status in 1981 and in its first season reigned supreme by winning the one-day competition. However, during the 1983 season, Brackenfell CC had to disband because the club had no facilities or field. After discussion with the Brackenfell municipal authorities the present sports fields were developed, which has been in use since 1985.

Provincial Players.

The club competed in Boland's top league until the end of the season in 2016/17 and has produced many provincial players and one national player in John Commins and Stiaan van Zyl .

Marais Erasmus

We are also very proud of the achievements of Marais Erasmus. Marais captained Brackenfell for many seasons and formed an integral part of the Brackenfell team who dominated Boland Cricket in the early 90's. Marais is currently on the elite umpiring panel of the ICC.

Start of a new era for Brackenfell CC

The season of 2017/18 saw Brackenfell Cricket Club move back into the WPCA leagues with four senior male teams and this has been our home ever since. Brackenfell Cricket Club are also very proud of developing our young players in our Junior Program and from season 2021/22 we will also be fielding a Ladies team. Our First XI competes in the top WPCA league and have been very competitive. Brackenfell is a well-disciplined and proud community-based club. We continue to serve the community by creating a venue where cricket players, cricket lovers, our youth and friends can come and relax. Our motto says it all: More Than Just Cricket! For some it's a place of relaxation, for others, its where we play the best game in the world.
